How To Create a Custom Link In Bio Page on Squarespace 7.1
Many business owners default to tools like LinkTree simply because "everyone else is doing it," without pausing to consider if it truly makes sense for their business.
If you’re pouring effort into platforms like Instagram or TikTok, odds are you're aiming to boost organic traffic to your website. It’s likely you're working hard to craft compelling visuals, master video edits, and hone your calls to action to encourage as many clicks as possible to your website.
But if you’re directing visitors to a third-party tool like LinkTree, rather than your own website, you’re seriously missing out on the benefits of that organic traffic, such as:
📈 SEO → Directing social referral traffic straight to your website is incredibly valuable for your site’s SEO. Over time, this can lead to Google referring more organic traffic, further boosting your online presence and visibility.
👨👩👧👧 AUDIENCE INSIGHTS → Directing all social media traffic to your website provides valuable data like your user demographic data, preferred device, website behavior insights and more.
🎨 FULL CUSTOMIZATION → With a third-party tool, you’re typically limited to preset layouts, design elements, fonts, and color placements. But when you build on your own site, you have complete freedom for customization.
💰 NO EXTRA COST → Many third-party tools charge for the level of customization and audience insights that are readily available on your own site. Why pay extra when you already have access to these features?
While it’s understandable for businesses managing custom-built websites on less beginner-friendly platforms to turn to these tools, there’s no reason for those using platforms like Squarespace not to create their own custom link in bio page on their website. With the latest features on 7.1, customization is effortless and eliminates any need for coding, making it a breeze to optimize your custom link-in-bio page for Instagram and beyond.
Watch the video demo below to see just how straightforward it can be, and how we implemented it on this Squarespace 7.1 website.
Disclaimer: This is a tutorial on how to build our custom-built link-in-bio page as shown here, so feel free to deviate from any of these instructions if you’d prefer to have a different design!
1. Create a new blank page.
To ensure that the page isn’t easily accessible to the public while it’s being built, you’ll want to make sure that it’s living in the “Not Linked” section.
Page Title — this is the text that appears in the top of your browser window. Keep it straightforward and concise. Some naming ideas could be “Links,” “Instagram Links”, “Link In Bio.”
Navigation Title — this is the the name that’ll be shown in your navigation menu. Since this will be an independent landing page that only serves to receive social referral traffic and won’t live in your navigation menu, this title won’t be seen publicly, but should still be given a name so you know what it’s referring to.
URL Slug — This is the URL you’ll be using to send traffic to your page. Keep it straightforward and concise. I use “robeandsignet.com/link-in-bio” but you could also use “links.”
2. Add a section as the header.
Click the “Add Section” button and choose a background with a template for the first section.
Background — Delete the stock background. Choose one of the art backgrounds, customize each element by choosing its corresponding brand color.
Section shape — click the “Edit Section” button in the top right corner, scroll to the bottom of the “Format” tab, go into the “Shape” settings, choose the outward pointed design, and change the alignment to “0px.”
Logo — Add an image block to host your logo.
Brand bio — Add a text blog under the logo image block and paste your Instagram bio description.
3. Add a section to host your quick links.
Click the “Add Section” blue button at the bottom of the page, choose the “Add a blank section” option in the top left corner of the “Add Section” page menu.
Header Text — Add a text block for your header text, change it to a Heading font, and name it “Quick Links.”
Links — Add a Button block to your section and update it to include your desired button text, link, color, sizing and font. Once customized, you can easily duplicate this button by clicking the overlapping square icon in the button menu. Then reformat and resize each button as shown in the video to have the same width and length, as well as update the text and corresponding links.
4. Add a section for your Freebies section.
Click the “Add Section” blue button at the bottom of the page, choose the “Add a blank section” option in the top left corner of the “Add Section” page menu.
Freebies banner header — Add the “Scrolling” block. Then navigate over to the “Design” settings, toggle “Background” to the right to add a background color and update it to your desired color.
Freebie thumbnails and text — Add an image block and text block to host each freebie. Adjust the sizing for each and upload its corresponding image, text and link. To streamline the process of adding more thumbnails/text for your other lead magnets, simply duplicate the image and text blocks and update it with its corresponding content.
5. Check the mobile view to see if adjustments are needed.
Save your progress, hover over to the top right hand corner, and click the smartphone icon to preview your landing page in mobile view. There, you’ll be able to see if there are any additional formatting adjustments that you need to make, like wonky spacing, resizing the logo/buttons, block positioning, changing block to text proportions, etc.
…and you’re done! 🏁
